Actor Kamal Haasan has welcomed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s order to shut down liquor outlets, calling it a step in line with public expectations.

In a statement, Kamal said families in Tamil Nadu have long wanted liquor shops removed from the vicinity of places of worship, educational institutions and bus stands, and noted that the Chief Minister has acted on this soon after taking office.

Kamal argued that retail sale of alcohol should never be the job of a government, and that the state’s responsibility should instead be to regulate and control alcohol consumption.

Referring to the closure of 717 shops as a beginning, he urged the government to increase the number and continue the action, extending his wishes for the initiative.
