London: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing intensifying calls to step down from within his own Labour Party following a major setback in recent local and regional elections.
In the polls, Labour is reported to have lost more than 1,400 council seats and also surrendered control of Wales’ Senedd. The results have triggered demands from party members that Starmer should resign.
Reports say the push is no longer limited to fringe voices. Senior figures, including Home Secretary Mahmood and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, are said to have met Starmer in person and urged him to quit.
Some junior government aides are also reported to have resigned, citing a loss of public confidence. Among Labour’s 403 MPs, around 78 are said to be calling for Starmer’s immediate resignation.
Starmer, however, has pledged to fight any challenge. He warned that if Labour were to mirror the turmoil seen under the previous Conservative governments—marked by frequent leadership changes—voters would not forgive it.
