Six people, including a policeman, were killed in a road accident near Tiruppur when a car crashed into people working near a police checkpost, police said.

The incident occurred around 4 am at the Kurukkathi police checkpost in Vellakovil. A lorry first hit the barricade near the checkpost, following which repair work was taken up.

Police said Vellakovil policeman Ravichandran and the lorry driver were engaged in fixing the barricade when a car, reportedly out of control, rammed into them. The impact led to the deaths of Ravichandran and five others who were in the car.

Police added that the car driver was believed to be drowsy at the time of the crash. The bodies were sent to a government hospital for post-mortem examination, and an inquiry is under way.
