The Vijay-led government won the confidence motion in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, with 144 MLAs voting in favour, 22 against and 5 choosing to remain neutral.
The trust vote was held after Governor Rajendra Arlekar directed Chief Minister Vijay, who recently took oath, to prove his majority in the House by May 13. The Assembly met at 9.30 am, when Vijay moved the confidence resolution.
During the debate, MLAs from the CPI(M), CPI and Muslim parties spoke in support of the government. Congress floor leader Rajesh Kumar said the party would back the motion. The DMK staged a walkout and did not participate in the vote.
According to the voting details, 171 members took part in the proceedings, while 60 did not participate. The Speaker declared the motion carried and announced that the Vijay government had won the trust vote, extending congratulations to the Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers.
