The Tamil Nadu government has issued an official notification in the Tamil Nadu Gazette declaring the Trichy East Assembly constituency vacant.
Taveka leader Vijay had contested the recent Assembly election from two constituencies—Perambur and Trichy East—and won in both. Before taking charge as Chief Minister, he resigned as the MLA from Trichy East on May 10.
With the vacancy now formally notified, rules require that an election be held within six months. The Election Commission is expected to issue a formal announcement in the coming days.
Sources indicate that Taveka may field K.P. Krishnan, who had lost from Lalgudi, for the Trichy East bypoll. With DMK also expected to fight hard to capture the seat after its defeat here, a keen contest is anticipated.
