Chennai: Opposition leader Udhayanidhi has said the DMK’s success, even after losing the 2026 election, is that the Chief Minister has himself stated that welfare schemes implemented during the DMK government will continue.

In a statement, Udhayanidhi accused the Chief Minister of not responding on the floor of the Assembly and instead releasing a statement after returning home. He said the DMK knows its vote share and that it has accepted the people’s verdict by taking its place in the opposition benches.

He also claimed the DMK is not seeking power without a majority and is not making repeated visits to Raj Bhavan out of “lust for office.” Responding to remarks that the DMK was rejected by voters, he argued that the votes cast for the DMK were part of the arithmetic that enabled the Chief Minister to assume office.

Referring to the DMK government formed in 2006, Udhayanidhi said it was not built by “borrowing” MLAs, horse-trading, splitting parties, or inducements. He said it was a government formed with the support of alliance partners and elected by the people, adding that while the DMK may have lost the 2026 election, ensuring the continuation of “Dravidian model” welfare schemes is a win for the opposition.
