A sudden change in weather brought strong winds and heavy rain across Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday evening, resulting in more than 100 deaths and several injuries, according to reports.
Dark clouds gathered before the storm intensified, with gusty winds and downpour forcing people to seek shelter under large trees and structures. The high winds uprooted trees, brought down power poles and sent advertising hoardings flying.
District-wise, Prayagraj recorded 21 deaths, followed by Bhadohi (18), Mirzapur (15) and Fatehpur (10). Unnao and Budaun reported six deaths each, while Pratapgarh and Bareilly reported two each.
Two deaths each were reported from Sitapur, Rae Bareli, Chandauli, Kanpur Dehat, Hardoi and Sambhal. One death each was reported from Kaushambi, Shahjahanpur, Sonbhadra and Lakhimpur.
With fallen trees blocking roads, rescue operations faced delays in several areas, and multiple houses were damaged. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences and directed officials to clear obstructions, speed up relief work and provide compensation to the families of the deceased.
