Madurai: The DMK is planning an organisational reshuffle in Tamil Nadu, with a proposal to appoint one district secretary for every two Assembly constituencies. The move is being seen as a response to the growing influence of the Vijay-led TVK among young voters.

The party currently has 72 districts. In Chennai, five district secretaries oversee 16 Assembly seats—two of them handling five seats each, while the remaining three manage two seats each. In several other districts too, a single district secretary is in charge of three or four constituencies.

At a meeting of district secretaries held on Wednesday, Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin reportedly spoke emotionally and indicated that multiple steps would be taken to contain the TVK wave that has attracted youth ahead of the Assembly election.

Senior DMK functionaries said the party intends to end the practice of district secretaries operating like “small kings” by increasing the number of posts and limiting each to two constituencies. They added that the leadership also wants to appoint more young members and, as a first step, push stronger DMK activity on social media.

Party sources said the changes could create more opportunities for youth within the DMK, with Vijay’s entry into politics indirectly accelerating the demand for such appointments.
