Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Thursday said the situation in the Strait of Hormuz is “very complicated” and that Tehran is prepared to assist the passage of all ships through the strategic waterway.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, where he is attending the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting, Araghchi said negotiations between the United States and Iran have run into difficulties due to a lack of trust. He argued that Iran has multiple reasons not to trust the US, and insisted that issues involving Iran cannot be resolved through weapons.
Araghchi said only an outcome achieved through dialogue would be suitable for addressing the wider problems in West Asia. He also reiterated that Iran has never sought nuclear weapons.
He alleged that Iran has been severely affected by what he described as US and Israeli violations, and said this was the second time the US had carried out an attack while talks were underway. He added that Iran has faced US economic sanctions for 40 years and would not be intimidated, saying the sanctions would not change Iran’s resolve or policy.
On India, Araghchi said Iran welcomed New Delhi’s constructive role on West Asian issues. He also underlined the importance Iran places on ties with India, citing long-standing friendship and strong trade, economic and political engagement based on mutual interest and respect.
