Madurai: Chief Minister Vijay has moved to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s intelligence apparatus, appointing officers after what officials describe as a careful screening process aimed at improving law and order.

The intelligence wing plays a key role in governance by assessing political, caste and organisational developments and providing advance inputs to the government. The report notes that while intelligence postings are usually stable, frequent transfers during the previous DMK government allegedly created operational difficulties.

Soon after taking charge, Vijay has signalled an emphasis on a “clean and corruption-free” administration and has sought stronger coordination from IAS and IPS officers. As part of this approach, he recently appointed IG Asragark to head the intelligence wing, a move that drew positive public response, the report said.

On Wednesday, Vijay appointed nine officers to the intelligence wing. Tirunavukkarasu, who had served as an SP and later DIG in the intelligence division and as a security officer to former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, was transferred and replaced by Vellore DIG Dharmarajan.

In other changes, Chennai South Joint Commissioner (Law & Order) P.C. Kalyan and Tirunelveli DIG Saravanan were moved to the intelligence division under the Chief Minister’s direct control. Tenkasi SP Mayilvahanan was appointed to the SPCID, which briefs the Chief Minister daily on events, issues and solutions. Thoothukudi SP Madan was shifted to the CM’s security intelligence unit, while Tiruvarur SP Garat Karun was posted to the integrated crime prevention unit that tracks rowdyism and narcotics. All officers transferred are said to be under 45 and noted for achievements in their fields.
