Chief Minister Vijay on Thursday (May 15) held a key meeting at the Chennai Secretariat with officials to review the proposed second airport at Parandur in Kancheepuram district.
With passenger and cargo traffic rising at Chennai’s Meenambakkam airport and limited scope for further expansion, the previous DMK-led government had decided to develop a new airport at Parandur through a public-private partnership. The project is estimated to require about 5,320 acres across Parandur and 20 surrounding villages.
The plan has faced sustained opposition from local farmers who fear loss of agricultural land. Vijay, as leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), had visited Parandur in January 2025 and expressed support for the protesters while opposing the project.
After TVK formed the government following an Assembly election victory, questions have been raised over whether the project will be scrapped or continued. Officials’ discussions on Thursday have fuelled expectations that the government will announce its decision soon.
Separately, Vijay met senior executives from leading companies, including BMW, TVS and Hudson, to discuss attracting new investments and reviewing existing ones. He also held consultations with water resources and agriculture officials on issues such as the Mekedatu dam, the planned release of water from Mettur dam on June 12, desilting of water bodies, Kuruvai cultivation and crop insurance. The Secretariat meetings were streamed live on Dinamalar’s digital platforms.
