Chennai: Amid continuing internal friction within the AIADMK, supporters aligned with former minister C.V. Shanmugam conducted special prayers and a homam, saying it was aimed at easing the party’s infighting.

With the party seen as divided, some functionaries have reportedly turned to spiritual practices in the hope of regaining earlier influence and bringing the organisation back together.

According to the report, key office-bearers gathered in the early hours at the residence of a former minister in MRC Nagar, Chennai, where a homam and special worship were performed. Discussions were also held there on ways to address the party’s problems.

Later that night, around 10 pm, “evil-eye removal” rituals were performed for MLAs said to be aligned with Shanmugam and former minister S.P. Velumani, including circling coconuts and lemons.

The rituals were described as an attempt to remove perceived obstacles and ensure that the aspirations of dissatisfied MLAs are fulfilled, with the party coming under their control, the report said.
