Five Italian scuba divers have died during an expedition to study an underwater cave in the Maldives, according to Italy’s foreign ministry in Rome.
The incident occurred in Vaavu Atoll, about 64 km from the Maldivian capital Malé, where the group was conducting research dives in caves located at a depth of around 50–60 metres.
Authorities said the divers were reported missing after they failed to return to the surface for an extended period following a dive.
Among the deceased, four were part of a team linked to the University of Genoa, including ecology professor Monica Montefalcone, her daughter and two researchers.
Officials said only one body has been recovered so far, while recovery operations for the remaining victims have been delayed due to adverse weather. Rescue teams are expected to resume efforts when conditions improve.
