New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has called for an urgent expansion of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), warning that its current structure has become outdated.

Speaking at the two-day meeting of BRICS foreign ministers in Delhi, Jaishankar said today’s global governance frameworks no longer reflect the realities of a diverse, multipolar world. He argued that without reform, the UN’s effectiveness and credibility risk being continually weakened.

He urged that both permanent and non-permanent membership of the UNSC be expanded without delay, and that discussions on restructuring begin quickly. Jaishankar also stressed the need for appropriate regional representation for countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Beyond the UNSC, he said international financial frameworks require immediate changes to better meet the needs of developing nations. He added that countries should ensure easier access to seasonal financial support to address losses caused by natural disasters such as droughts and floods.
