Police across Tamil Nadu have begun a statewide survey to compile details of crimes that occurred at TASMAC-linked drinking centres and the cases registered in connection with them during the past five years.
The exercise comes after TVK leader Vijay, after taking charge as Chief Minister, ordered the closure of 717 TASMAC outlets located near schools, colleges, places of worship and crowded bus stands. TASMAC officials have shut more than 160 shops so far, and the process is continuing.
Police have also warned that TASMAC outlets must be closed at the stipulated time, and that strict action will be taken if liquor is sold to persons below 21 years of age.
According to police, serious offences including murders have been reported at some drinking centres. They said several such centres in different parts of the state were found operating without licences, with reports of illegal liquor sales and extended operating hours.
Officials said information on unlicensed centres and the crime incidents linked to them is now being collected as part of the survey.
