The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday announced that the southwest monsoon has begun over the Andaman Sea region.

According to the IMD, the monsoon set in on May 16 over parts of the south Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. The development comes as the weather agency had earlier indicated the possibility of an early onset this year.

In Tamil Nadu, several districts have been seeing summer showers amid intense heat, the report noted.

The southwest monsoon typically lasts until September and usually begins in June. The IMD said there is a possibility of the monsoon reaching Kerala on May 26, about six days earlier than normal.
