Chennai: The Hindu Tamil Party has condemned Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) president K. Veeramani for raising a caste-based question over an IAS officer’s posting, and demanded that he apologise.

In a statement, party leader Ram Ravikumar referred to the appointment of IAS officer Suvarna as Secretary in the Tourism, Culture and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department. He alleged that Veeramani questioned the posting by describing it as the appointment of a “Brahmin lady” to the HR&CE secretary’s post.

Ravikumar said IAS officers are posted to departments as per government rules, and that Suvarna’s appointment should be seen in that context. He accused Veeramani of viewing such matters through what he called a “Brahmin-opposition lens.”

He further asked why Veeramani had not referred to earlier HR&CE secretaries by their caste, and why he did not object during the previous DMK regime when Raman was appointed as the government’s Advocate General. Calling caste-based support or opposition “perverse,” he urged Veeramani to withdraw the remarks and apologise.

The statement added that referring to anyone by caste is wrong, and appealed to Veeramani to adopt a general, non-caste outlook in public discourse.
