Madurai: Tamil Nadu Animal Husbandry Assistants have appealed for a promotion pathway, saying many employees remain in the same designation from the time they join service until retirement.

In a representation submitted to Chief Minister Vijay, the state association said staff work across veterinary dispensaries and hospitals alongside assistant doctors, doctors, inspectors and assistants. They claimed those who join as Animal Husbandry Assistants around the age of 20 often retire at 60 without any change in rank.

The association pointed out that other cadres in the department receive promotions periodically. It said assistant veterinary doctors move up through successive levels to become additional directors, while veterinary inspectors advance through multiple grades up to senior supervisory roles.

Citing examples from other government departments as well, the association argued that employees who enter at lower levels typically get promoted before retirement. They said they have been raising the demand for promotions from the MGR era through successive governments, but without a resolution.

Urging the present administration to act, the association requested an official order providing at least one promotion every 10 years for Animal Husbandry Assistants.
