The Supreme Court on Sunday granted bail to a man accused in a Jammu and Kashmir case involving alleged drug trafficking and terror funding.

The case was registered by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The accused, a resident of Kupwara, has been in custody since June 2020 and had approached the apex court seeking bail.

A bench comprising Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice Ujjal heard the matter and observed that even in cases booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), bail should be treated as the rule and jail as the exception.

While granting bail to Syed Iftikhar Andrabi, the court directed him to surrender his passport and required him to appear at the local police station once every 15 days.
