VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan on Sunday said his party remains divided over whether it should accept a place in the TTVK government’s cabinet. Speaking at an event in Padappai in Kancheepuram district, he noted that his personal view is against joining the cabinet, while a majority within the party wants to participate.
Referring to political discussions around his past electoral prospects, Thirumavalavan said some believe the political landscape would have seen major changes had he contested and won from the Kattumannarkoil constituency.
He reiterated that the VCK had taken a pre-election stand that Dravidian parties should not be weakened. Despite criticism, he said the party had consistently argued that both the AIADMK and the DMK should remain strong, and claimed that the BJP’s vote share had fallen from 11% in the previous Lok Sabha election to 2.5%.
Warning that weakening Dravidian parties would create space for new alignments, he said a situation could emerge over time where politics narrows to a TTVK-versus-BJP frame, and that Dravidian parties must stay alert and strong to prevent that.
On the cabinet question, he said he is not taking a “self-willed” decision and that the internal debate has not concluded. While reiterating his firm stance against joining the cabinet, he added that he has not taken a final call “up to this moment” and needs time to arrive at a decision based on discussion.
