India and Sweden have announced a broader partnership covering artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, trade and cultural exchange following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Gothenburg.

Modi arrived in Sweden as part of an official multi-country tour across West Asia and Europe. He was received at Gothenburg airport by Kristersson, with members of the Indian diaspora also extending a welcome. Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria joined the meeting.

The two leaders reviewed bilateral ties and discussed strengthening cooperation in the economy and fast-evolving technology sectors. They also agreed on a target to double bilateral trade and investment over the next five years, and exchanged views on global issues including UN reforms and counter-terrorism.

Modi thanked Sweden for supporting India’s position in the fight against terrorism. During the visit, he was also conferred Sweden’s highest honour, the Royal Order of the Polar Star (Commander Grand Cross), in recognition of his contribution to India–Sweden relations and leadership.

Key outcomes included elevating the relationship to a “strategic partnership” status and approving a joint statement and action plan for 2026–2030. The countries launched “India–Sweden Joint Innovation Partnership 2.0,” including plans for an online India–Sweden Joint Science and Technology Centre to boost collaboration in AI, 6G, quantum computing, minerals and space research, along with focus areas such as renewable energy, smart cities and water management. A new “India–Sweden Technology and AI Corridor” and an “India–Sweden MSME and Start-up Platform” were also announced, alongside a “Tagore–Sweden Lecture Series” under the theme “Vikas Bhi Virasat Bhi” to deepen people-to-people and cultural engagement.
