A 23-year-old Indian-origin youth, Tushar Kumar, has been elected mayor in Britain and has assumed office as the mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood in eastern England.
With this appointment, he has been recognised as the UK’s youngest Indian-origin mayor. Kumar entered local politics early, winning election as a Labour Party councillor at the age of 20 and joining the Elstree and Borehamwood town council in 2023. He later served as deputy mayor.
At the time he was elected councillor, Kumar was pursuing his second year of an undergraduate degree in politics at King’s College London. He has since progressed from councillor to deputy mayor and now to the town council’s top civic post.
In a statement after taking charge, Kumar said becoming mayor was the greatest honour of his life and expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him. He also noted that his family in India has no political background and shared his ambition of one day becoming Britain’s prime minister, like Rishi Sunak.
Kumar lived in Rohtak, Haryana, until the age of 10 before his parents moved to the UK. His mother, Parveen Rani, works with the Hertsmere Borough Council and has also served as deputy mayor.
