New Delhi: The BJP has strongly criticised Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for remarks it said insulted Prime Minister Narendra Modi. BJP national president Nitin Nabin said Gandhi was “in despair” and would have to face serious consequences for his words.
The controversy follows a rally in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, where Gandhi referred to PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah as “traitors”, triggering sharp reactions from the ruling party.
In an interview, Nabin described the speech as “unfortunate” and reflective of an “anarchic mindset”. He alleged that repeated electoral defeats had fuelled Gandhi’s frustration, which, he claimed, was now evident in his public statements.
Nabin also questioned the basis of the accusation, asking whether eliminating Naxalism, protecting the nation’s borders, and enhancing the global stature of India’s tricolour could be termed “treason”.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla, meanwhile, said the language used against the Prime Minister reflected Gandhi’s upbringing. He alleged that Congress leaders repeatedly target Modi because he comes from a backward community, and said Gandhi should first look within his own family before speaking about “betrayal”.
