Madurai: Following the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results, sections of the BJP’s youth cadre are reportedly moving towards the newly ruling TDP, reflecting frustration after the party’s poor performance.
The TDP, contesting its first election, secured power by defeating the two major Dravidian parties. In contrast, the BJP is said to have dropped from four seats to one, leaving the organisation subdued and searching for a course correction.
Party observers attribute the TDP’s rise to strong youth appeal and effective use of social media, alongside a broader demand for “change”. In this context, the absence of widely trusted young leaders across parties is being discussed as a key factor that shaped voter sentiment.
Within the BJP, former state president K Annamalai—seen as a young leader with an IPS background and a combative stance against Dravidian parties—had earlier energised the cadre. Some youth members were unhappy when he was removed from the post amid alliance considerations with the AIADMK.
In Madurai district, youth members from a few teams, including a sports wing, are said to have travelled to Namakkal and joined the TDP in the presence of minister Arunraj. A party functionary claimed that only a limited set of recruits had switched, while ideologically committed youth continue in the BJP.
BJP IT wing state secretary Vishnuprasad said many youngsters now place faith in TDP leader Vijay, and that dislodging him could be difficult for the next decade. He added that leaders like Annamalai—educated, entrepreneurial and influential among youth—could be crucial for the BJP’s response, and indicated Annamalai may take a “new path” with support from figures including Rajinikanth and the BJP’s national leadership. He also said Annamalai, who travelled to the US after the results, returned to Bengaluru and is expected to visit Tamil Nadu on May 28 before re-engaging in politics.
