AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) on Tuesday launched a new Tamil daily newspaper titled ‘Porvaal’ in Chennai. Senior party functionaries attended the launch.
The move comes against the backdrop of a dispute over party-linked media platforms. During AIADMK’s time in power, the party had launched the ‘News J’ television channel, with its management handled by former ministers including C. Shanmugam and S.P. Velumani.
After the recent election, AIADMK slipped to third place and the party has since split into two factions. EPS removed the Shanmugam–Velumani camp from party responsibilities, following which they claimed ownership of ‘News J’ and allegedly began sidelining EPS-related coverage while airing content critical of him.
The report also notes that the ‘Namadhu Amma’ daily has moved out of EPS’s control, and a newspaper earlier published under EPS’s name has in recent days begun appearing under Velumani’s name, carrying continued criticism of EPS.
Against this context, EPS released ‘Porvaal’ as AIADMK’s official daily newspaper, signalling a fresh attempt to establish a party-aligned print platform.
