Madurai Central MLA Mustafa, who had recently drawn criticism for remarks about “abolishing Sanatanam,” allegedly attempted to enter the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple after the gates were closed, sparking anger among devotees.

According to the report, the incident occurred last Sunday after the temple’s closing time. Police personnel on duty informed him that no one would be allowed inside once the temple was shut.

Mustafa reportedly said he was the area’s MLA and claimed he had come to see the ongoing kumbabhishekam-related renovation works. However, police maintained that entry was not permitted after closure. He later spoke to reporters and left the spot.

BJP functionaries condemned the attempt, alleging he tried to enter with eight others. They cited HR&CE department rules, claiming that entry could be considered only if he signed an affidavit stating faith in the temple, and argued that he should not be allowed in given his earlier remarks. They also demanded that Chief Minister Vijay state his position on the issue.
