Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has said that national interest should take precedence over political differences, and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for working to uphold India’s prestige abroad.

Speaking at an event in Mumbai, Pawar said India may have varied political viewpoints, but when it comes to the country’s honour, parties should not foreground their differences. He added that all parties should come together whenever there is an opportunity to protect the nation’s interests.

Pawar also recalled that former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi, P.V. Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh worked for the country’s future and stature during their tenures at the Centre.

His remarks come amid political sparring over Modi’s official five-nation foreign tour. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other party leaders had criticised the trip, while the BJP responded, making Pawar’s comments notable in the ongoing debate.
