Chennai: Tamil Nadu has so far shut 513 TASMAC retail liquor shops that were operating within 500 metres of places of worship and educational institutions, officials said.
TASMAC, the state-run corporation, sells liquor through its retail outlets across the state. Citing public interest, Chief Minister Vijay on May 12 directed TASMAC officials to close 717 outlets located within 500 metres of places of worship, educational institutions and bus stands within two weeks.
Following the directive, officials carried out an assessment of the outlets and began the closure process. As of Tuesday, 513 shops had been closed.
TASMAC is planning to shut the remaining outlets by the end of this weekend and submit a report to the government, according to the update.
