Public responses have welcomed Chief Minister Vijay’s reported move to strengthen the functioning of Amma Canteens, a low-cost food scheme launched during the AIADMK period. Many said continuing a welfare programme regardless of who started it reflects a positive approach.
Several readers stressed that the key improvement must be consistent food quality and cleanliness. They noted that, despite low prices, some people avoided the canteens in the past due to doubts over hygiene and taste, and said better standards would make the service more reliable for the poor and working class.
Others called for expanding the scheme so more people can benefit, describing the canteens as crucial support for daily-wage workers, students staying in hostels and elderly residents. Some recalled that the canteens helped many during the COVID-19 period and said strengthening them is important amid concerns about rising costs and shortages.
A section of readers also appreciated that the programme is being continued under the same name, and urged the government to focus on infrastructure and menu improvements. One suggestion was to add millet-based dishes along with existing staples, while keeping prices affordable.
The comments collectively underline an expectation that the government’s focus should remain on quality, hygiene and accessibility, so the canteens continue to serve as a dependable meal option for vulnerable groups.
