New Delhi: Pradeep Gupta, founder of election research firm Axis My India, has said the BJP’s rule at the Centre could continue for a long stretch, provided its governance performance does not deteriorate.

Gupta, whose firm has been credited with accurately calling several election outcomes, said the BJP government that began in 2014 may have the potential to last for at least 20 years. In his view, the party’s position will remain secure as long as its administrative effectiveness does not weaken.

Drawing a parallel with earlier political cycles, he referred to the period around 1977 when the Congress, after a long run in power, began facing difficulties. He said Indian politics often sees a roughly 20-year cycle, and argued that a similar pattern could keep the BJP as a central pillar of national politics for an extended period.

Gupta added that the BJP’s large mandate has also raised public expectations, and said the party and its leadership must perform better going forward. He maintained that the BJP would keep winning until its performance becomes weak or poor, while the opposition would continue to lose.

He also said the Congress, which has been out of power for 15 years, may need at least another five years to shift public support back in its favour.
