India and Italy have agreed to elevate their relationship to the next stage, described as a “special partnership”, after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome.
During the discussions, the two leaders focused on strengthening cooperation in trade, defence, green energy and emerging technologies. They also exchanged views on artificial intelligence, critical minerals, space and the nuclear energy sector.
As part of his official visit to Italy—the final leg of a five-nation tour—PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome in Rome. He later met Italian President Sergio Mattarella, with the two sides discussing bilateral friendship, trade, investment and cultural links.
PM Meloni hosted a dinner for PM Modi ahead of the formal talks, and the leaders also visited Rome’s historic Colosseum. Addressing the media jointly, PM Modi said they had discussed building a broader India-Italy partnership.
Bilateral trade has been rising in recent years, with trade valued at about Rs 1.35 lakh crore last year. Both countries have set a target to increase annual trade to Rs 1.90 lakh crore by 2029, making Italy India’s fourth-largest trade partner within the European Union.
