DVAC officials arrested a sub-registrar in Ramanathapuram and an alleged middleman after a complaint that a bribe was demanded for registering a property deed.
According to the complaint, a person approached Sub-Registrar Ramanathan at the Velipattinam registration office to register a property in Ramanathapuram town. The official allegedly demanded Rs 50 lakh to complete the registration.
Unwilling to pay, the complainant approached the DVAC. Acting on their instructions, negotiations were allegedly routed through broker Ayub Khan, and a first instalment of Rs 25 lakh was handed over.
DVAC officials said the sub-registrar and the broker were caught red-handed when an additional Rs 3 lakh was received. Further inquiry is under way.
