The Calcutta High Court has restrained Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee from travelling abroad without prior permission of the court, in connection with a case over alleged defamatory remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The case stems from comments made at a public meeting held ahead of the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections. Following the speech, an FIR was registered against Banerjee, after which he approached the High Court seeking to have the case quashed.

After hearing the matter, the court directed the West Bengal Police not to take any coercive steps against Banerjee until July 31.

At the same time, the court said he cannot leave the country without its approval and must fully cooperate with the investigation. Observing that the allegations mentioned in the FIR require a proper probe, the High Court permitted the investigation to continue.
