An Australian court has imposed a fine of Rs 4.48 crore on social media platform X, owned by US entrepreneur Elon Musk, for violating the country’s online safety rules related to children.
The case stems from a transparency notice issued in 2023 by Australia’s eSafety Commissioner to the company then known as Twitter. The notice sought a report detailing what measures were being taken to prevent child sexual abuse and exploitation on the platform.
After Musk acquired the company and rebranded it as X, the platform argued that it had no obligation to answer the questions raised in the earlier notice.
The court rejected that position and ordered X to pay the penalty, holding the company accountable for non-compliance with the transparency requirement.
