New Delhi: The Central Drugs Control organisation has clarified that medicines administered through injections for aesthetic procedures do not fall under the definition of cosmetics, and beauticians are not permitted to use them.

Across the country, beauty centres and clinics have seen a rise in injection-based aesthetic procedures marketed as “beauty treatments”, with social media advertising contributing to their growing popularity.

In an order aimed at consumer safety and curbing misleading promotions and unauthorised practices by beauty centres and individuals, the regulator reiterated that cosmetics are products meant to be applied on the body by rubbing, pouring, sprinkling or spraying to beautify, cleanse, enhance attractiveness or alter appearance.

The order states that injectable preparations are outside this definition, and beauty centres or individuals are not allowed to administer any cosmetic product via injection. It warned of strict action against those who continue such practices under the guise of cosmetics.

Members of the public can report violations or improper practices via email to the drug control authorities or to state drug licensing officials, the order added.
