A by-election to a vacant Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu will be held on June 18, following the resignation of former AIADMK minister C.V. Shanmugam.
Shanmugam, who was serving as a Rajya Sabha MP, recently won the Tamil Nadu Assembly election from the Mayilam constituency in Villupuram district as an AIADMK candidate. After being elected to the Assembly, he had to step down from the Rajya Sabha.
He submitted his resignation letter to Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, leading to the vacancy in the state’s Rajya Sabha representation.
As per the schedule announced, nominations can be filed until June 8, and the last date for withdrawal is June 11. Polling will take place on June 18, with results to be declared the same day at 5 pm.
With the ruling Thawega government enjoying a majority in the Tamil Nadu Assembly along with its allies, it is expected to have an advantage in securing the seat.
