Chennai: The Railway Board has instructed all railway zones to take steps to provide air-conditioning in train drivers’ cabins, following concerns over rising summer heat.
Railway sources said around 60,000 loco pilots work across the rail network, and the intense heat during peak summer can lead to physical fatigue while on duty.
Railway unions had raised the demand last week, urging that AC facilities be installed and made fully functional in the driver cabins of all trains.
Officials said newly introduced express and electric locomotives already come with AC-equipped driver cabins. Work is also under way to add AC in the cabins of a few remaining older locomotives.
