The Union government has initiated steps to reclaim the land occupied by the Delhi Gymkhana Club in the Safdarjung area of the national capital, and has directed that it be handed over by June 5.

Delhi Gymkhana Club is a century-old private club set up during the British colonial period. Spread across about 27 acres in a prime central location, it counts senior officials, politicians and wealthy individuals among its members.

The move comes amid allegations of financial irregularities at the club. Earlier, the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal had directed that a committee appointed by the Centre should take charge of the club’s administration.

In its latest order, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said the land is required for national security and infrastructure-related activities. The directive was issued through the Land and Development Office under the ministry.

The order states that the government will assume responsibility for managing the premises on June 5. It also warns that if the property is not handed over by the deadline, legal action will be taken and possession will be assumed as per law.
