With Bakrid set to be observed on May 28, the Delhi government has issued a warning that sacrificing cows, camels and other legally prohibited animals in the national capital is unlawful and will invite criminal action.

In a statement, Delhi Development Minister Kapil Mishra urged people to celebrate the festival peacefully and follow the government’s guidelines. He said animal sacrifice is barred in public places such as streets, roads, residential areas and other open spaces where people gather.

The government has permitted qurbani only at locations approved by the Delhi administration. It also cautioned that markets operating in violation of the ban, and the sale of animals in such markets, would be treated as offences under the law.

The minister said intensified monitoring would be carried out to prevent illegal sale and sacrifice of animals. The statement also noted that dumping animal waste in open areas or into drains has been prohibited.
