DMK is preparing to face the upcoming local body elections on its own, amid signs of a widening split in its earlier Assembly-election alliance, according to information circulating within the party.
The report says parties that had been part of the DMK-led front—Congress, CPM, CPI, VCK and the Indian Union Muslim League—have now extended support to TVK to form the government. It also notes uncertainty over whether the two Communist parties will remain with DMK, as they have not been included in the new Cabinet.
With VCK and the Muslim League reportedly getting Cabinet representation under TVK, DMK leaders are said to believe there is little scope for an electoral tie-up with them in the local body polls. Senior DMK functionaries met Stalin at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai, where he is reported to have advised cadres to avoid harsh personal attacks while not relying on alliance partners going forward.
According to senior party sources quoted in the report, contesting alone would allow DMK to assess its grassroots strength, take its promises directly to voters, and offer more opportunities to ordinary party workers without seat-sharing pressures. They also claim the move could help the party strengthen its base in rural and local bodies and serve as groundwork for the 2029 Lok Sabha election, even if a solo contest makes victories harder in some places.
