Delta farmers seek clarity on Mekedatu stance

Farmers in the Cauvery delta are watching closely for Chief Minister Vijay’s response after Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said Tamil Nadu has “no right” to oppose the proposed Mekedatu dam.

The Cauvery is described as Tamil Nadu’s lifeline, supporting agriculture across the delta and serving as a drinking water source for people in about 20 districts. Any move to build a dam across the river is therefore viewed with deep concern among farmers and residents.

Karnataka has been pursuing steps to build the dam at Mekedatu and is said to be moving firmly towards securing Central government approval. Shivakumar, who also holds the water resources portfolio, said a revised detailed project report has been prepared and would be submitted soon, adding that a ground-breaking ceremony would follow once approval is granted.

The remarks have triggered shock among farmers, who expect the Tamil Nadu government to protect the state’s rights through both administrative and political channels. With the Congress now aligned with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and CM Vijay seen as close to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, farmers are asking whether the issue will be taken up with Karnataka to find a resolution.
