Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly cautioned Union ministers that India may have to face not only an economic crunch but also a political crisis in the coming years. The remarks were said to have been made at a Union Cabinet meeting in New Delhi after he returned from a five-day foreign tour.

The meeting, which lasted about four-and-a-half hours, discussed the “extraordinary situation” arising from a fuel squeeze linked to the West Asia conflict. Modi is said to have asked all departments to be prepared and to respond to the situation with the same resolve shown during the COVID-19 period.

He also reportedly underlined the role of higher solar power generation in easing pressure from fuel disruptions, and stressed giving greater importance to domestic extraction of natural gas and crude oil.

According to the report, Modi linked the political challenge to the election calendar, noting the 2029 Lok Sabha polls and Assembly elections expected in late 2028 in states including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana. He is said to have warned that political narratives and campaigns on social media could intensify, and urged ministers to focus on engaging youth—especially students—while continuing to aim for victories in upcoming Assembly elections.
