Tulsi Gabbard has announced her resignation as the United States’ intelligence director, saying she is stepping away from public service to support her husband as he faces a serious health battle.
In a resignation letter shared on social media, Gabbard said her husband, Abraham, has been diagnosed with bone cancer. She said the challenges ahead require her to be by his side, and that continuing in office while he faces physical difficulties alone would weigh on her conscience.
Gabbard thanked President Donald Trump and his team for placing trust in her and for the concern shown to her family during what she described as a difficult time. She also expressed gratitude to the American people for the opportunity to serve the nation.
Her exit has drawn attention amid reports of differences over the Iran war. The report also notes that Gabbard, a former Hawaii lawmaker, was appointed to the post in February last year after Trump began his second term and served as the eighth director of national intelligence.
