Gurtej Singh Sandhu, an IIT Delhi graduate who moved to the United States for doctoral studies, has emerged as one of America’s most prolific inventors—surpassing Thomas Alva Edison’s long-cited patent tally.
According to the report, Sandhu has secured more than 1,400 patents in the US and over 2,200 patents worldwide, exceeding Edison’s 1,093 patents. With this, he is said to rank as the 7th highest patent holder in American history.
Sandhu, of Indian origin, was born and raised in Amritsar, Punjab. He began his education at Guru Nanak Dev University, later earned an M.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi, and completed a Ph.D. in Physics at the University of North Carolina.
He has been a key figure in global microelectronics research and has worked with Micron Technology for about 35 years. The report credits his semiconductor innovations with helping advanced memory chips used in smartphones, laptops, cloud computing and data centres become smaller and faster, and notes that he currently holds a major leadership role at the company.
The achievement has also drawn attention online, with users sharing and praising his journey as a reflection of Indian talent on the global stage.
