Meena, who served as state deputy secretary of the DMK’s Arts, Literature and Rationalist Forum, has announced that she is leaving the party.
The decision follows a controversy after Meena visited the home of AIADMK MLA Leema Rose Martin in Lalgudi and congratulated her. After Meena posted the photograph on social media, DMK supporters criticised her sharply.
In a video message, Meena said she and Leema Rose Martin have been family friends for about 20 years and that their friendship cannot be discarded “in a minute.” She insisted she had not switched parties, but blamed social media attacks for creating pressure and distress.
Amid the fallout, Meena said she is resigning from the party’s basic membership and all positions. She had earlier submitted an application seeking to contest from Coimbatore’s Singanallur constituency and attended an interview, but the seat was allotted to the Congress. She also said she had sought an opportunity to become mayor during the 2022 local body elections, which she claimed was denied due to internal party politics.
