Nagapattinam witnessed fresh friction within the DMK-led alliance after posters put up by local DMK workers targeted Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MNM) leader and sitting MLA Jawahirullah.
Jawahirullah won the Nagapattinam Assembly seat as part of the DMK alliance, contesting on the DMK’s “Rising Sun” symbol. The posters, pasted across several parts of the town, questioned his move to seek elections on a separate party symbol.
The development follows a two-day meeting in Chennai on May 20 and 21, chaired by Jawahirullah, where MNM’s leadership reportedly passed a resolution to contest upcoming Lok Sabha, Assembly and local body elections on its own symbol.
The issue comes amid discontent among DMK cadres after several parties that had earlier won under the DMK-led alliance—Congress, CPI(M), CPI, VCK and the Indian Union Muslim League—extended support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. The posters in Nagapattinam urged Jawahirullah to resign his MLA post and recontest from the same constituency on his own symbol.
