Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) has said that recent night-time power outages in parts of the Chennai region are largely due to faults in distribution equipment such as cables and transformers, especially during peak load hours.

Power interruptions have been reported over the past few days in several locations across Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu districts, causing inconvenience to residents. TNEB said the disruptions are linked to failures in certain distribution stations and related equipment.

According to the board, the state’s daily power demand has recently remained below 20,000 MW and is being met without difficulty. It added that the State Load Dispatch Centre and control centres are monitoring supply to ensure distribution to consumers.

In the Chennai region, electricity is supplied to about 3.879 million consumers through 253 substations, 40,798 transformers, 16,582 km of cables and 18,092 km of overhead lines, the board said.

To address faults quickly, TNEB said mobile maintenance teams and technical staff have been deployed across all distribution circles. Additional temporary workers have also been appointed for 24-hour monitoring and restoration, and complaints received through consumer service centres, field officials and websites are being acted upon promptly.
