Supply disruption hits India
India is facing a sharp shortage of petroleum products due to the Iran–US–Israel conflict, which has disrupted global supplies. Shipments of crude oil and cooking gas to India via the Strait of Hormuz have been affected, worsening the situation.
PM urges higher output
Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged both public and private oil companies to raise production to meet domestic needs. Public sector oil firms responded by increasing output, according to the report.
Minister’s anger at continued exports
However, some private oil companies, including Reliance, were said to have continued exporting without fully factoring in India’s domestic situation. This reportedly led to losses running into crores for public sector firms and drew the ire of Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
LPG demand spikes, restrictions imposed
Puri said India’s daily LPG requirement is about 50 lakh cylinders, but panic triggered by the war pushed demand to around 75 lakh cylinders a day. He said this made the situation difficult to manage and was the reason for introducing several restrictions. The report added that private firms are now aligning more with domestic needs rather than focusing heavily on exports.
