New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Suryakant on Monday advised lawyers not to get emotional or react negatively over the controversy linked to an online page titled “Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)”.

The issue traces back to oral remarks made by the Chief Justice during a hearing a few days ago, which sparked criticism. He later clarified that his words were misrepresented and that he was referring to fake and falsely credentialed individuals, not targeting youth.

After the episode, an online page using the name “CJP” was created, and the Centre has reportedly sought a ban on it.

A public interest petition was filed in the Supreme Court objecting to the alleged commercial use of the court’s oral observations and seeking a CBI inquiry into the activities linked to “CJP”.

The matter came up before a bench comprising Chief Justice Suryakant, Justice Jaymalya Bagchi and Justice V M Pancholi. During arguments, advocate N K Goswami said the online activity was harming the judiciary’s reputation, to which the Chief Justice responded that it should not be taken emotionally.
