The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has issued a heavy rain warning for Tamil Nadu for the next two days. It said eight districts could receive heavy showers on Monday (May 26), accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.
According to the bulletin, an atmospheric trough extends across the southwest Bay of Bengal, the south Tamil Nadu coastal belt, the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining parts of the Comorin Sea. This system is expected to support widespread convective activity over parts of the state.
For Sunday (May 25), heavy rain with lightning and gusty winds is likely at isolated places in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi and Theni districts.
On Monday (May 26), similar conditions are forecast at isolated places over the hill areas of Coimbatore and Tiruppur, and in Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Theni, Dindigul and Kanniyakumari districts.
The weather office added that from May 27 to May 29, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds may occur at a few places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. It also cautioned that high temperature and humidity could cause discomfort in some coastal areas, and advised fishermen not to venture into the Tamil Nadu coastal waters, the Gulf of Mannar and the Comorin Sea as winds may reach 40–50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, through May 29.
